The Maggie Tree

Finally a female-based theatre network in Edmonton! The Maggie Tree
is a brand new company created by two dynamic Edmonton artists, Kristi Hansen and Vanessa
Sabourin that aims to expand the visibility of work by women in the arts. The
network is not exclusive to women but seeks to strengthen the female voice in
society in an open and accessible way by supporting projects initiated and/or
lead by women.
The first of The
Maggie Tree’s activity is a production of
Hunger Striking, written by
University
of Alberta MFA Playwriting
graduate, Kit Brennan. This performance marks Hunger Striking’s Edmonton debut and is timely as February 4 – 10 is
Eating Disorder Awareness week.
Vanessa Sabourin (Madagascar,
A Christmas Carol), having recently returned from the Centre for Performance
Research in Wales, makes her directorial debut with the incredible skill of
Kristi Hansen (Woody) and Amber Borotsik (Expanse Festival, Scythe, Duck Duck Bang). Lori Gawryluik (Noiselab Inc.) creates an original soundscape that takes you from
the hollows of your mind to the rolling hills of Ireland.
Hunger Striking
When one of Sarah’s students dies in the
school cafeteria, she must reinvestigate her own experience of anorexia. She
travels from the here and now of her reality into her past, via Irish Mythology,
and the suffragettes at the turn of the century. Movement and story combine to
take you into an altered world and deliver a powerful experience. Though the
battleground may be different, Sarah’s struggle to reconcile herself is unnervingly easy to identify with. When your past
actions return with a vengeance, can you forgive yourself and find compassion
for your frailty?
The Maggie Tree’s
premier production explodes the dialogue between text and movement to explore
Sarah’s struggle creating a resonance that goes beyond the walls of logic, deep
into the pulse of the body.
